There are miles and mile of absolutely stunning coast line in San Luis Obispo County. A favorite is Avila Beach. It’s a nestled cove with a couple of piers, one that used to have a small gauge train that ran out to the end at the turn-of-the-century to unload the ships that docked there.
Recently, Avila Beach has become a popular spot for migrating humpback whales. For the past few years they have spent a few weeks just off the end of the pier in the bay breaching and feeding. Just looking at these ancient barnacled creatures is quite a sight!
There are plenty of restaurants, shops, tasting rooms and restaurants to choose from in Avila proper. It’s a place you can explore in a day. There is also the Bob Jones Trail nearby for running or biking, as well as vendors to rent equipment for paddle boarding and kayaking.
We’ll explore Avila Beach more in the future. #LetsGoSLO
